The main theme of the event was skateboarding. Mangueirinha has no safe place for skateboarders to practice, despite the growing popularity of the sport among young teens. However, to prove that this was a concern shared by the entire community, and not just a handful of kids, the forum spent months conducting surveys. They visited local schools to gain the opinions of their peers, they canvassed at the local market to see how parents and other adults felt about skateboarding, and they gathered signatures supporting the eventual construction of a skate park.
While progress on these fronts will not be immediate, the secretaries were very warm and responsive to future dialogue. They recognized the importance of children and adolescents taking direct action in the mattes that concerned them, and the need on their part to be responsive, rather than dismissive, of those concerns.
At least in Mangueirinha, skateboarders won't be looked at as some "slackers" but rather as active citizens seeking to create safe spaces and alternatives to violence and criminal activity in their communities.
